My costs rose; how much should I raise price to keep margin — and how much more expensive does the customer see?
Cost of goods has risen and you need to change the price. The question is not “how much more expensive did it get”, but “what should the new price be so you keep what you used to keep — and how much more expensive does the customer see?”
The trap this tool removes is simple: most sellers add the same amount costs rose to the price. Rial profit stays the same, but percentage margin shrinks, because that same profit sits on a larger price. Keeping percentage margin needs a larger increase. Platform fees — a percent of price that grows with every price rise — are usually overlooked too.
This tool shows three suggested prices separately, how much more each costs the customer, and the reverse question: if you do not raise price at all, what happens to your margin.
All amounts in Toman and for one unit.
The price that keeps today’s percentage margin; price rises in the same proportion as variable cost per unit. This is usually the right answer.
The price that keeps today's profit amount (in tomans). The increase is smaller, but percentage margin falls because the same profit sits on a larger price.
| Status | Price (toman) | Contribution profit per unit | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before cost increase | 480,000 | +116,600 | 24.3% |
| At the new cost and the same price | 480,000 | +6,600 | 1.4% |
Keeping the price means −110,000 toman off profit per unit and −22.9% points off the margin.
The price required in each case to preserve the same margin; other variable costs are held at their new values.
| Cost-of-goods increase | New unit cost | Variable cost per unit | Required price | Price increase (Toman) | Increase the customer sees |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| +10% | 330,000 | 360,000 | 531,692 | +51,692 | +10.8% |
| +20% | 360,000 | 390,000 | 576,000 | +96,000 | +20.0% |
| +30% | 390,000 | 420,000 | 620,308 | +140,308 | +29.2% |
| +40% | 420,000 | 450,000 | 664,615 | +184,615 | +38.5% |
| +50% | 450,000 | 480,000 | 708,923 | +228,923 | +47.7% |
The "preserve purchasing power" price is not shown: this tool does not assume any inflation rate for you. If you want it, enter the rate yourself with its source and period.
This figure is contribution profit, not net profit: fixed costs have not yet been deducted.
Sales volume is assumed not to change with price; in practice a price rise usually reduces sales. To see that side, see the "true order profit" tool and the discount impact tools.
Because other variable costs rose at a different rate, the required price increase percent does not match the cost increase percent.
To share, re-enter the inputs or send the Excel file: none of your business figures go in the page URL, and nothing is stored on the server either.

After discount, fees, shipping and returns, how much is left from each order?
Did sales really grow, or did only prices rise?
If I give a 20% discount, how much more must I sell so profit does not fall?
When should I reorder, and how much, so stock neither sits idle nor runs out?
